I’ve shared my experiences and highlighted some of my favorite talks, including insights from Observability Day, Jaeger, Prometheus 2.0, and some key sessions so far.

Highlights from Day 4

Here are a few talks I really enjoyed:

Shopify’s Open Source Approach to Network Monitoring with eBPF, Vector, and ClickHouse - Sebastian Rabenhorst & Matt Franklin, Shopify

Shopify's session was all about how they built a crazy-scalable, open-source network monitoring setup for the cloud. Sebastian and Matt walked us through how they used eBPF, Vector, ClickHouse, and Grafana to track over 30 million network events per second across thousands of services in Kubernetes clusters.

They shared some of the lessons they learned along the way and practical tips on how we can set up a similar system ourselves. Super helpful for anyone trying to level up their network monitoring game!

Platform Engineering in Financial Institutions: The Practitioner Panel - Paula Kennedy, Syntasso; Chris Plank, NatWest Bank; Suhail Patel, Monzo; Jinhong Brejnholt, Saxo Bank; Rachael Wonnacott, Fidelity Intern...

This panel brought together experts from top banks and financial institutions to share their real-world stories—both the wins and the lessons learned. One of the key takeaways is how platform engineering can improve the developer experience, spark rapid innovation, and drive efficiencies across teams.

Kubernetes Upgrades: Less Pain, More Gain (and Maybe a Little Swearing) - Jago Macleod, Google

Kubernetes upgrades have always been a challenge for many users, mainly because of the complexity involved in managing the various independently versioned components.

In this talk, Jago from Google explored strategies and best practices for reducing disruption and making Kubernetes upgrades smoother. He also discussed some common pitfalls and challenges people face, along with practical tips to make the process more reliable. One of the key points highlighted was the risk of relying solely on Long Term Support (LTS) versions.

Tutorial: OpenTelemetry Hands-on - Automatic and Manual Instrumentation for Java and Python Apps - Tobias Angerstein, Novatec Consulting GmbH & Tiffany Jernigan, Independent

The tutorial took everyone through using OpenTelemetry to instrument a simple application, collect metrics, traces, and logs, and send them to various backends for analysis. Tobias and Tiffany also covered the differences between auto and manual instrumentation and evaluated the collected data, including traces, logs, and metrics.

On another note, if you're using OpenTelemetry, Last9 is now fully OTel-native. This means no vendor lock-in, you're future-ready with OTel, and migrating is easy if you're already on board.

Last9’s Telemetry Warehouse now supports Logs and Traces, offering a unified view for high cardinality observability to simplify monitoring and troubleshooting.

That’s a wrap on the talks! It’s been such a pleasure meeting everyone here. If you’re new to events like this, Sebastian’s got some great pointers to help you make the most of it. Check out what he’s shared and give him a follow!
